If I Needed 3 Press Features in 90 Days, I'd Do This
Because we don't have $5K/month and a prayer to throw at a PR firm... so here's what we're doing instead
Most people think getting press means hiring a PR firm, signing a 6-month retainer, and writing a check for $5,000+ a month while you wait and hope something sticks.
And look, if you’ve got that budget and that timeline, great. I’m not gonna sit here and knock PR agencies because I’ve worked in agencies my whole career. I know the good ones do get you results.
BUT ALSO, most of us don’t have that kind of time or money sitting around. Like, please, in this economy?!
Remember when Carrie was like “Samantha, I can’t afford you.” Well, there’s a reason for that.
If want you want from PR is to be seen as more authoritative in your field, tap into new audiences, and to finally build that “as seen in tab” in your website, there’s a quick way to do this yourself.
And I’m gonna teach you right now.
So here’s what I’d actually do if I were starting from scratch and wanted 3 real press features in the next 90 days.
Step 1: Get Clear on What Kind of Press You’re Going After
Not all press is created equal, and trying to land everything at once is how you end up landing nothing.
For a 90-day sprint, the combo that works best is this:
One expert mention — getting quoted as a source in an article, like this:
One guest post — your byline, your ideas, in a publication your audience reads (and yes, some of these pay you!), like this: (btw, Esther got paid $350 for this article)
One local feature — a profile or spotlight in a local publication
Btw, not so humble brag, these are all my clients!! SO proud of them!
Each one of these press coverage formats serves a different purpose. Together, they start building that “as seen in” bar on your website that makes people take you seriously before they even get on a call with you.
Step 2: Focus — and Go After Each One Differently
Most people send one generic pitch to ten random outlets and wonder why no one responds. It doesn’t work that way.
Here’s how to approach each hit:
For your expert mention: Sign up for Qwoted immediately if you haven’t already. Set up your keywords. You’ll get weekly email alerts when journalists are actively looking for sources on topics in your space. All you have to do is pitch yourself. This is the lowest-hanging fruit in PR and most people have never even heard of it.
For your local feature: There are publications actively hunting for local stories to feature right now. Canvas Rebel is one of them. They’re looking for interesting people building interesting things — which, hi, that’s you. Pitch your story. It’s more straightforward than you think.
For your guest post: Two things that will get you a yes faster than anything else: pitch something timely and pitch editors who are already looking.
Here’s a real example. You know the Coldplay kiss cam moment that broke the internet, the one where the CEO got caught on camera with his HR chief and the entire world had thoughts?
My client saw that moment and we moved fast. We pitched an HR publication with this angle: “Who Does the Head of HR Call When the Problem Is the CEO?”
The editor said yes within TWO DAYS of her sending the pitch.
Step 3: Know Your Angle (This Is Where Most People Get Stuck)
The strategy above is not complicated. The part that trips people up is figuring out what to pitch and how to position themselves.
What angle do you lead with? How do you make a journalist actually care? How do you stand out in an inbox full of pitches from people who’ve been doing this for years?
That’s the piece I help unlock.
Which Is Exactly Why I Created This
I just opened up a brand new offer: 3 Press Features. 90 Days. Fill Your “As Seen In” Bar.
It’s a focused, 1:1 sprint where we build your PR strategy, nail your pitch angles, and get you to three real press features in 90 days.
I’m keeping this open until 3 people sign up — and then it’s closed. No exceptions. I keep this small on purpose because every client gets my direct 1:1 attention.
If this is exactly what you’ve been waiting for, don’t sit on it.
